After one million years, I logged on to friendster and updated my profile. I went through the profiles of my friends and suddenly wanted to change my own. So I did. That profile would probably be good for another million years or when I decide to sign in again. Whichever comes first.

Everyone's all about love today, so I'm gonna write about something else. Hate.
As in, I hate chemistry. Chem sucks. It sucks like nothing else sucks. I've never disliked a subject more than chem, never like this, before.
And with that, I wish you all a chem-less Valentine's day. :)

[Monday

|
Five years and one month ago, nabuo ang Barkadahan.
As I was saying, we went to Glorietta to, you know, hang out and watch the throngs of people who have nothing better to do than hang out and watch us. We had a great time, so much that we started calling each other “kabarkada”.
The next Monday at school, yun pa rin tawag namin sa isa’t isa. Na-feel naman namin masyado yung name na yun, and the Barkadahan was born. We adopted the 12th of January anniversary. For the first year and a half, we greeted each other religiously every 12th of the month. Then nagsipasukan na kami sa tertiary education institutions (a.k.a. college), and paminsan-minsan na lang. At least that’s what I understood. (Haha we love you Esber!)
Pero nine talaga kami. Before that significant day in 2002 we were unofficially two groups, one in each section. Sa Patience, nandun si Kaye, Geli, Meg, Ressoh, at ako. Nasa Gracious naman sila Yelli, Mitch, Reina, at Esther the Family Friend.
Kadalasan two or three or five yung may crush sa isang guy. Kami ni Ressoh, kay J. He was younger than either of us, kaso hanep magdrums. As in hanep.
Joke. Pero yun nga, we each had and/or have our share of admirer/s and admireds (Ito surely plural). As of now, yung iba samin may love life (saya niyo naman sa Vday), yung iba masaya din naman sa life of a singleton.
Iba-iba kami ngayon ng schools. Three of us go to Manila Doctors College, one goes to CSB, another to Mapua, still another to Remedios T. Romuladez Memorial School in Makati Med, one to Ateneo, one went to Southville and is now working in the UK, and one to a school in Quezon City that I don’t know. But the only CCP I know is the Cultural Center of the Philippines, and I’m pretty sure they only educate people in the performing arts and not in the assistance of medical aid.
We miss Reina. A lot. Siya yung nasa UK ngayon, a working girl who earns her own money na. Aside from that, she also has British men falling all over themselves for her. London Bridge is falling down once again. Reina’s coming home this April, though. We have planned a dinner in honor of her homecoming as soon as she returns. And then we’ll probably go to Boracay. We, or them, di pa ko sure. Since aalis din kami, chances are I won’t be there when they fly to the island of white sands and bikini-clad babes and tanned, muscled guys. Ano ngayon. I’m going to see ice naman. And penguins. Sa Boracay ba may penguins? Walaaaaa!
Ice and penguins aside, let me just take this opportunity to say to my wonderful friends how blessed I am to have them be in my life. Yes, I’m serious na. Actually naluluha na ko. If old-fashioned pen and paper ito may teardrops na sa letter. But I’m holding the tears back kasi baka masira laptop ko, sayang naman. Maganda pa naman. But to say the least, you have made my Anchors Away life (wag naman rollercoaster, para unique. And mas masaya sa Anchors Away kesa sa Space Shuttle diba) one heck of a ride. You screamed with me when I was at the top, and joined me in my moments of quietness when I was at a low point. I truly thank God I have you. Sixty-one months of “official barkada friendship” has turned into a lifetime’s worth of laughter and joy, and I would never trade it for anything else. Except siguro one billion dollars. And even if I do choose the one billion dollars, I’d be so rich you’d still want to be my friends. So either way, we’re pretty much guaranteed a friendship that would surpass our lifetime. Sorry if that doesn’t sound appealing to you, but that’s the fact. We’re stuck with each other, for better or worse, in sickness and in health, till death do us part. Without the rings and the white dress and the aisle. And the bridesmaid and the cute flower girl and ring bearer, and the grand wedding reception. But with food. There will always, ALWAYS be food.
To 61 months and 6100 more.
Love you Barkadahan!:)

| My major problem |
[Thursday
February 1st, 2007] |
| You scored as Journalism. You are an aspiring journalist, and you should major in journalism! Like me, you are passionate about writing and expressing yourself, and you want the world to understand your beliefs through writing.
English | | 92% | Theater | | 92% | Journalism | | 92% | Anthropology | | 83% | Mathematics | | 83% | Linguistics | | 83% | Psychology | | 83% | Sociology | | 67% | Art | | 58% | Dance | | 50% | Philosophy | | 42% | Engineering | | 33% | Biology | | 17% | Chemistry | | 8% | </td>
What is your Perfect Major? (PLEASE RATE ME!!<3) created with QuizFarm.com |
I don't know if this is a valid test (yuck psych testing) coz today I took our chem test which I failed miserably. And theater? Me? You've gotta be kidding. I can't act to save my life. And I find it hard to believe I scored 83% on Mathematics. Math. Tied with psychology, which is my major right now. It actually scares me. Math?
Oh well, I agree with Marru, I'll take math over chem any day. Just as long as it's still in the range of numbers I can actually count. :)
(If you notice, journalism and biology are at opposite ends of the list. Invalid test? Maybe. Untrue? Maybe not.)

| The week that is the ninth circle of hell |
[Saturday
January 27th, 2007] |
ALTP has forced me to commute from Katipunan to Marikina by myself. This I have to do twice a week--Friday and Saturday afternoon, of all days. Six hours a week I am to sit with a pile of unused Japanese 2006 planners surrounded by mountains of papers, scratch and otherwise, while the rumbling sounds of heavy machines treating paper pulp serve as the musci while we work. Brown scrap here, white paper there, leather-like covers and plastics in this box. I'm surprised I still have cut-less hands, what with all the paper we tear out from the planners.
Japanese planners are so interesting. All of them have thin address books tucked at the back cover of the planner. Some planners and calendars have stickers. Stickers for business, which I can't read because it was in Japanese, and I can't decipher the picture as well. Some were for personal use: Date (heart), Sports (sports icon), Friends (people), and even... Period (something that looked like a moon but that does not). The Japanese think of everything.
It's eight in the morning on a Sunday and I'm supposed to be sleeping still up to eleven maybe. But no, I still have to blog. I mean, study. Yes, I still have to study. My philo oral exam is scheduled for tomorrow morning, chem postlab on Tuesday, child psych report and psych testing exam on wednesday (if you were a teacher, would you schedule a deadline for a major paper and a long test at the same time?), and the dreaded chem long test on thursday. ALTP on Friday and Saturday. And I rest on the seventh day.
My stomach is beginning to complain that my body is now running on reserve glucose from my liver instead of nutrients from a hearty and healthy breakfast. Something I still remember from physio psych, though I haven't a clue why I do. Still, have to feed my body, otherwise I wouldn't be able to think why the traumatisms from life make us reflect and why I have to be delivered from my solitude of being by the Other, for which I am infinitely responsible. And yet we find that "the true life is elsewhere". Huh? Arthur Rimbaud was one serious 18-year-old when he wrote that. He was gay, according to our philo class, but Tiff said he looked like Brad Pitt.
But I bet he'd prefer Matt Damon over Jennifer and Angelina.

[Sunday
January 7th, 2007] |
survey from keziah
What did you do in 2006 that you'd never done before? I rode the MRT by myself from Santolan to Ayala. :)
Did you keep your new years' resolutions, and will you make more for next year? I don't make resolutions.
Did anyone close to you give birth? Nope
Did anyone close to you die? Nope.
What countries did you visit? I stayed in my own country for the past 365+ days.
What would you like to have in 2007 that you lacked in 2006? Boyfriend. Kidding. I want lots of things.
What date from 2006 will remain etched upon your memory, and why? January 20. Simply because it's my birthday.
What was your biggest achievement of the year? Riding the MRT by myself from Santolan to Ayala. :) And also, my highest QPI so far.
What was your biggest failure? Being generally irresponsible, which I proved this week when I found out I scored at the 13th percentile sa pagkaresponsable in one personality test. Yikes.
Did you suffer illness or injury? No way, my immune system did not let me down this year.
What was the best thing you bought? Does it have to be something I bought with my money? Coz I haven't bought anything worth mentioning as the best thing I bought.
Whose behavior merited celebration? Mine. Heehee. :) I don't know.
Whose behavior made you appalled and depressed? Mine. Well, seriously, some friends, but that was only for a while. And then it was only "ahh..."
Where did most of your money go? Gifts and toffee nut fraps
What did you get really, really, really excited about? Sem break and Christmas break.
What song(s) will always remind you of 2006? Nothing in particular.

What do you wish you'd done less of? Be irresponsible.
How many one-night stands? Never in the past, never in the future.
What was your favorite TV program? Oh man.. Last year, I got hooked on Prison Break, House, and Grey's Anatomy. This year, I'm hoping I'll get to watch PB season 2, House season 3, and Grey's season 3 coz binitin nilang lahat ako!
Do you hate anyone now that you didn't hate this time last year? :)
What was the best book you read? Dinner with a Perfect Stranger. A must read, it's so great.
What was your greatest musical discovery? Hmm...can't think of anything. Although I did like a lot of songs this year.
What did you want and get? Ooh where should I start? A great digicam, an iBook, an iPod video, a DL certificate, an autographed jersey...:)
What was your favorite film of this year? Happy Feet! Or maybe this is just a recency effect. Forgot which films were shown this year.
What did you do on your birthday, and how old were you? I went to my high school to watch Christian Bautista's "homecoming". What a weird way to celebrate my 19th year.
What one thing would have made your year immeasurably more satisfying? Having a vacation out of my house.
How would you describe your personal fashion concept in 2006? "Hmm...what can I wear today? Sige, ito ok na."
What kept you sane? Who said anything about sanity?
Which celebrity/public figure did you fancy the most? Wentworth Miller, Chad Michael Murray, and
What political issue stirred you the most? Subic rape case? Again, this might be just another case of the recency effect. (that's the psych student in me talking)
Who did you miss? My grandma who went to the States but came back today and Erin who stayed with us during the break.
Who was the best new person you met? The best? Hmm...I don't know.
Tell us a valuable life lesson you learned in 2006: Being a leader entails a lot than just overseeing things.
What was the nicest thing someone told you about yourself: "You're hot." Kidding again. I don't keep records of compliments. That, or I have a poor memory, which I do have.
The most touching experience you've had this year? Lots. New year's eve family tradition and others.
What did you like most about yourself this year? Really studying and becoming active in my org.
What did you hate most about yourself this year? My irreponsibility.
Quote a song lyric that sums up your year: "Now I've had the time of my life..." Although I expect this year to rock even more.
Was 2006 a good year for you? See previous question. Still gonna ask?
What was your favorite moment of the year? Hard to pick just one.
What was your least favorite moment of the year? I can name two...but I'd rather not bring them up.
Where were you when 2006 began? 2006 or 2007? Oh well, either way, I was at home with my beautiful family.
Who were you with? My beautiful family.
Where will you be when 2006 ends? Same place.

Do a lot of drugs in 2006? Oh yeah! Haha I am kidding. Didn't even take vitamins. Oops.
You do anything you are ashamed of this year? Yes and please don't remind me of those things.
How much money did you spend in 2006? I don't keep track. I'll only get depressed.
What was your proudest moment of 2006? The moment I can most vividly remember is the Honors' Assembly.
What was your most embarrassing moment of 2006? Like I'm gonna write it here.
If you could go back in time to any moment of 2006 and change something, what would it be? My embarrassing moment of 2006.
What are your plans for 2007? Know what I want to do for my career, take the NMAT, have a fantastic practicum at a place I want to work, go on the vacation of a lifetime, maintain DL status, have a wonderful senior year.
How are you different now that the year has ended? I have shorter hair. I know myself better now, I've grown closer to God, I now have study habits.
What are your wishes for the new year? More pounds and inches (with my age...probably a hopeless cause) added to my frame, a closer relationship with God, achievement of all my goals and plans. Here's to 2007 and all the wonderful, truly exciting things in store for us.

I have Saturday classes.
My agonizing frustration over the whole registration started at approximately 8:01am when I finally got my eyes to open and look at my cellphone which, just a few moments ago it seemed, had beeped twice to alert me that someone with my number and a cellphone has contacted me. The messages it contained were enough to make me jump out of bed and turn on my laptop, eyes straining to open, hair as wild as Africa, and mouth dry as the Sahara. I quickly scanned the Pol Sci sections Tiff told me were closed...
If I was a heathen, I would have cursed at the top of my lungs every single asterisk-worthy word known to this world, not minding my sister still blissfully sleeping on the bed and our neighbors from 37A-F. More texting, until I realized, after doing my morning rituals, that the only choice I had left was the 9-12 polsci class. Oh this would be fun. This is all chem 25 and 26's fault. Their available class schedules totally ruined the rest of my own. So much for choosing your own classes.
Second sem sucks. I always manage not to get a 3.35 every second semester. I'm hoping for a change this sem, but with chem on my class schedule...
And then there's the fact that we have two four-hour lab classes every week. And that I got a professor whom everyone says to avoid. It's not my choice, I tell them, it's the only class I can take without it conflicting with another. I can't take the Saturday lab because I have to get the Saturday polsci class, because chem won't allow me to have a TTh polsci class after 1:30 on account of our afternon lab session every Tuesday. Almost every single class of mine were determined solely on the foundations of my chem class.
Six weeks to Christmas break. I can't wait.

I have the best, most wonderful, all-time hands down best parents ever!
You know those times when you want something, but you’re not sure if you really want it, if it’s worth the P18000 you’re planning to spend on. So you think of asking your parents, but then dismiss that idea since you know they already bought you that laptop you wanted and much more besides, not to mention the “please-buy-these-stuff-for-me-in-Chicago” list you gave them when they left for the US two weeks ago and which they were indeed able to buy. No, I think I’m still quite content with my “old-fashioned” iPod mini, if I overlook its battery problems that render it practically useless as an on-the-go, portable music player. But it still works; I love that thing!
And yet there’s no controlling my shrieks of “OH MY GOSH!!” and the huge grin which stuck itself stubbornly in my face when my dad produced a small black box out of the maleta he was carrying and presented it to me. On the front, Captain Jack Sparrow’s smiling face greeted me. On the back, the Red Hot Chili Peppers are Now Playing “Dani California”. As I opened the box, I half-expected to see light coming out of it to the sounds of a heavenly chorus.
OA? Well, you would be too if your parents bought you that thing you were trying not to want without you asking for it. Best surprise I’ve had this year. I suspect I’d be a YouTube surfer from now till who-knows-when. Who-knows-when being November 12, 2006.
My sem break just got more interesting. :)

| Ang pinakahihintay ko |
[Thursday
October 19th, 2006] |

So my final exam schedule is as follows:
Monday, October 16- nothing Tuesday, October 17- nothing Wednesday, October 18- nothing Thursday, October 19 1:45-2:00 Philo orals 1:30-3:30 Expe finals Friday, October 20 9:15-9:30 Theo orals
Yes, this is my schedule. Three--no, six days of no tests (since wala na kaming class tomorrow), then two days of three tests. And yes, my philo and expe exams really overlap. We signed up for the oral exam slots last week. It was a first-come, first-to-choose-timeslot basis, and I was lucky enough to get a good slot, thanks to Tiff who signed for me while I was waiting in line outside with other philo classmates. Then on Monday we learned that of all the days of the week, of all the times of the day, the expe exam will start on the exact same time as our philo orals. We talked to Ma’am Jaime na about this, and she agreed to let us in late for the test. I will have thirty minutes less to answer the comprehensive exam for expe. Well, maybe forty minutes less. From Dela Costa, I will have to RUN to THIRD FLOOR BEL for the exam. Good luck to me.
*Note to self: wear running shoes on Thursday.
Oh no wait. Do we have to dress business-y for the philo orals? I CANNOT be in heels that day.
And I want to kill a certain somebody with a loud mouth.

It's not that we lost the championship. Though I must admit that sucks. But seeing the faces of our players, particularly JC, Macky, and Doug, were enough to make me feel saddened. They worked hard this year; they deserved the championship trophy and wanted it badly. Come to think of it, so does the UST team. And to them, congratulations. Although, as I told my parents after the game, "Hindi na ko mag-aaral ng medicine sa UST!" Hahaha :)
Ate and I attended the mass after the game to show our support. As the team entered, they were received with loud applause from the members of the congregation. Albeit with puffy eyes and a sad disposition, they strode forward and shook hands with whomever extended his hand, hugged friends and relatives, tried to smile and keep their chins up. When JC entered, it was obvious he had been crying. He hugged his brother Mark tight in the middle of the crowd, clinging to him like his life depended on it. It was a sight so heart-breaking I almost cried.
After the mass (where Ate and I felt completely OP), the three graduating co-captains and Coach Norman Black said a few words each. Well, Doug, JC, and Coach Norman did. Macky said a few hundred. It was fun listening to his speech, where he thanked every one of the people who supported him--and I mean EVERY ONE. He named the coached one by one, the professors who made an impact on him, and even his high school friends and the families of his ex-girlfriends, and declared his love for his girlfriend though she's is Switzerland. Doug, meanwhile, said that maybe the Lord has better plans for him, since obviously winning the championship trophy was not in His will. He said that the Lord has been his best friend that entire time, and that he was able to share the word with the team. At this Ate and I looked at each other, the same question on our minds. "Christian kaya siya?" Hmm... JC brought a hand towel with him since he knew "hindi kakayanin." All of them felt that they let the team down, let the school down, let the Ateneo community down. In Macky's words, "I wish I could say I did my best, but I if I did, I would have the championship trophy right here now." JC apologized for not making the last layup shot in the last seconds of the game; I could tell he really thought he was the reason, at least partly, for their defeat.
Lastly, Coach Norman thanked the three co-captains for their hard work and dedication. To JC he said, "In my heart you will always be the MVP."
But the the REAL MVP took the microphone--Mr. Manuel V. Pangilinan, that is. The team's biggest supporter. And our newest building. :)
So then after the speeches and stuff Ate and I hung around Gesu for a while, and then decided to ask JC for a picture. There were actually quite a few people around him, cameras in hand. Poor JC's back must have hurt as he was constantly bent down to try to level himself with the people of normal height around him. But he was friendly, and agreed to a picture and an autograph (haha pakapalan na ng mukha, last year na niya eh). After JC, Ate and I decided we wanted more pics. :)
"Sino naman? Ayun si Macky!" But we saw Macky was still busy, so I looked around for another player. "Ayun si Chris! Dun muna tayo kay Chris!" Haha excited ba daw.
Chris was holding the runner-up trophy, and also agreed to have his picture taken with us. Both he and JC thanked us for supporting the team; and we thanked them for playing well.
Asking for Macky's picture was a little more eventful.
MACKY: [Turning back after some girl fans finished chatting with him.]
MACKY'S FRIEND: [seeing us, or maybe seeing Ate slap me on the shoulder and say "Ikaw na lang!"] Pare, meron pa.
ME: Hi Macky, pwede picture? [all the while feeling extremely embarrassed]
MACKY: [seeing my scandalous biggie camera] Wow pangprofessional na yan ah!
ME: Hahaha hindi naman masyado! Medyo lang!
Macky's friend took our picture, but not after Macky teased about not knowing how to operate my camera.
After Macky, we tried looking for Doug so that we'll have a picture with all three captains, but he was nowhere to be found. Sayang, but it's ok.
Haay. It's also a good thing I'm not friends with any of the team. It would be impossible to try to cheer them up after yesterday. Oh well, I guess I'll just see them in PBA!
Thank you Macky Escalona, Doug Kramer, and JC Intal. Win or lose it's the school we choose!
